.S. Representative Michael Burgess is a doctor from Denton County, which is part of his district in North Texas. Rep. Burgess discusses how long he thinks it will take for Congress to reach an agreement on the additional aid package Congress is working on now. The 0 weekly unemployment benefit is over – it ended Friday. Over three million Texans have filed for unemployment since March. He also talks about his effort to streamline the process for people sick with the coronavirus to receive blood plasma from COVID-19 survivors.

Rep. Burgess represents the majority of Denton County and parts of Tarrant County. He has represented the constituents of the 26th District since 2003. Burgess serves on the House and Energy and Commerce Committee as the Republican Leader of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health. He is also a member of the House Rules Committee. As of the 115th Congress, Rep. Burgess is the most senior medical doctor, on both sides of the aisle, serving in the House.

He was raised in Denton, Texas, and attended The Selwyn School, graduating in 1968 as valedictorian. Burgess earned both an undergraduate and a master’s degree from North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas). He received his M.D. from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and completed his residency programs at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.
