As you know, I’m a mentor at various idea-stage Startup Incubators around Austin, with my help revolving around helping startups win or raise money through pitching and investor decks.

One of them is Founder Institute, which my friend Martin Martinez brought to Austin. He asked me and Chris Michael Harris, host of the Entrepreneur Hour podcast, to livestream interviews with graduates of the 3rd Cohort, as well as Directors of the program. This short interview is with Paul O’Brien, one of the Directors, and the CEO of MediaTech Ventures. I ask him about the state of Venture Capital in Austin, the 3 types of people investors look for in a team they want to fund, and what idea-stage startup teams.

This was recorded right before an event, so please excuse the background noise.

As always, enjoy!

Many entrepreneurs I’ve come across have the impressions that venture capitalists are in the business of taking risks. Simply put, that is not true.

Venture capital firms are in the business of mitigating risk relative to reward. The money a VC invests into a business is never the first money into the business – that’s founder then friends and family money.

Venture capitalists get involved after the team and mission of the startup have been established – in the Seed and Series A, Series B and Series C stages, and at each of those stages the business has been considerably de-risked from subsequent stages.

Ultimately, if you’re looking to approach a venture capitalists to raise money for your startup, it’s important to understand that they’re looking to invest in opportunities that are primed to press on the gas, not ventures with a fanciful idea and a prayer of knocking it out of the park.

In today’s podcast we’re looking at the financial aspect of startups and venture capital funds, and what is the women’s role and status there.

Today we’re speaking with Sara Brand, Ph.D.. She is currently the Founding General Partner at True Wealth Ventures, a venture capital firm out of Austin, TX, and their main focus is funding women-led startups, which is rare, but what’s rarer is the fact that the General Partners are in this case, both women. Even though their investor base is not comprised entirely by women, it is good to see that at least we can point to one venture capital fund that is led 100% by women.

This is very enlightening conversation about the state of startups in the country, the funding that goes to women-run startups, and the number of women at the decision making levels across corporations and startups, and the differences between a companies with a boardroom comprised of all men, versus a company with a boardroom comprised with a more balanced ratio of male-female.
