It almost seems insensitive to discuss politics after seeing the faces of the children murdered in their own classrooms in Uvalde, Texas. But politics can create solutions. Is there a political solution to what happened – Democrats and Republicans remain far apart on what needs to happen?
The shooting in Uvalde is the fourth major mass shooting in Texas over the last few years. There was one at a church in Sutherland Springs in 2017. At Santa Fe High School outside Houston in 2018. And at an El Paso Walmart in 2019. So, what have Governor Abbott and the Republican legislature done and have not done to stop these kinds of shootings?
Congressman Joaquin Castro is asking for a federal investigation into the law enforcement response in Uvalde, Texas. Victims’ families are asking why officers remained outside for an hour rather than confronting the shooter inside the school building. That delay might have cost lives. Republican state Rep. James White, from southeast Texas, chairs The House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee and has been briefed by Texas DPS.
