United Way of Greater Austin and Google Fiber excluded 5 out of 7 mayoral candidates from a debate on finding lasting solutions to poverty, and decided to invite the two wealthiest candidates who also happen to have been in power during the past 10 years, while poverty has gotten worse!
Their clear attempt to “fix” the election and maintain the status quo was not to be ignored by mayoral candidate Travis Duncan, who called them out on this blatant violation of the people’s right to a fair and open election process.
We hold elections to hear NEW voices, NEW ideas, and NEW solutions not to listen deeper to the same mentality that makes poverty worse.
Travis Duncan was originally invited months in advance, but as time grew closer to the debate, he was uninvited and told that “someone from the top made the decision,” which leads to the obvious question: What does Travis have to say that the status quo does not want heard by the voters? And why are the two wealthiest candidates chosen to make decisions for the poorest communities?
