Social Proof, Data AI, Online Dating and Defense Innovation — Austin Road Trip Part 2

We crash Social Media Week and meet Y Combinator startup Proof, explore data-driven artificial intelligence with Likely.AI, learn about a different kind of dating app called The Round, and attend the Center for Defense Innovation’s Grand Opening.

Episode 20 — Chris, a self-proclaimed sneaker head, kicks off the second day of the team’s Austin road trip by dragging Jordan and Dave along to Private Stock and Dirty Laundry USA, two of Austin’s best-known street wear shops. Later that evening the team crashes the city’s Social Media Week happy hour event. While networking at the party they are introduced to Austin Distel, co-founder of the Y Combinator start-up Proof that enables websites to show visitors how many people are currently viewing a product.

After a long day of start-up meetings going on little more than coffee and beer, the Dumb Money team makes the questionable decision to trek out deep into rural Austin to the legendary Salt Lick BBQ. Over dinner they recollect on the day’s most interesting meetings including Likely.ai, a company founded by Brad McDaniel that leverages artificial intelligence to help banks and mortgage companies identify likely home sellers. Another favorite is Aether, an immersive media technology company founded by Nikola Todorovic and actor Tye Sheridan, best known for his leading role in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. Lastly the team meets with Zachery Casler of The Round, a unique dating app that locks its matched users into real dates at predetermined times and locations.

Before calling wraps on a successful trip they celebrate the grand opening of the impressive Army Futures Command innovation center with at Capital Factory.
