A recent minor spat in my own marriage got me thinking about this common piece of relationship advice I find many couples fall for: not going to bed angry.
I find this to be a complete misconception, and can in fact has more potential for damage than being constructive. That’s for three main reasons:
1. Some things are so minor that it’s better to simply let them slide
2. Other seemingly minor issues are the tip of an iceberg above a sea of miscommunication covering much larger problems that simply can’t be addressed in a few hours
3. Sometimes you or your partner can’t give the conflict the attention it deserves at 12:30 AM and you’re more likely so escalate the matter when you’re physically and mentally exhausted.
So, what do you do? Well, acknowledge the issue respectfully. Bring it up when you know you’re best capable to deal with it. And if it’s right then and there, but your partner expresses they can’t deal with at that moment, respect that boundary while expressing that it’s important enough to you to talk about it when they have the capacity to do so.
As always, watch the video and feel free to reach out with any questions. Leave a comment or contact me.

About me:
My 20+ years of experience in business finance, business law and entrepreneurship have led me to believe that numbers and logic are awesome tools, but understanding human nature and emotions is the first step to business success.
The Cenkus Law Firm provides services related to mergers & acquisitions, general business issues and startups, including founders’ agreements and fundraising. I also consult with entrepreneurs and have invested my own capital as an angel investor.
From 2010-2013 I served as Chief Legal Counsel of a publicly-traded international oilfield services company. From 2001 to 2006, I and a partner founded and built Paragon Residential Mortgage. Paragon was sold to Bridge Investments in 2006.
I hold a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania.
Now, I live in Austin, TX with my wife and two kids. I enjoy reading, running, classic movies, great food and wine and some great American football.
