(19 Jan 1999) English/Nat
The son of the former U-S President George Bush was sworn in for second four year term on Tuesday.
George W. Bush fleshed out the themes of a possible presidential campaign in his inaugural address that preached the value of racialdiversity and urged people, young and old alike, “to draw a clear line between right and wrong.”
Although Bush is a front-runner among prospective Republican presidential candidates, he made no mention of President Clinton or his impeachment trial.
George W. Bush was sworn in for a second time shortly after noon in a tradition-laden ceremony on the Capitol’s south steps.
His father, former President George Bush, mother Barbara, and other family members shared a red-, white- and blue-striped stage outside the pink granite capitol building.
They watched proudly on as the ceremony unfolded.
Bush won re-election in November with a staggering 69 percent of the vote.
He leads a state government that’s dominated almost entirely by Republicans for the first time since Reconstruction.
This level of support has led many Republicans to see him as the most likely man to take on the Democrats in the next presidential race in the year 2000.
Even though the Senate began hearing from the President Bill Clinton’s lawyers in Washington, he did not mention President Bill Clinton directly,
But he did say the state needs to be open, educated, diverse and united by common values.
SOUNDBITE:
“So I’m optimistic our children’s lives will continue to improve in material terms. The risk is that their moral and spiritual lives will not improve. You see, the strength of a society should not be measured in the wealth it accumulates, or the technology it develops. The strength of a society should be measured in the value people share.”
SUPER CAPTION: George W. Bush, Governor of Texas
Bush, who says he claimed a record portion of the state’s growing Hispanic vote, voiced hope that the state will unify and celebrate its diverse cultures.
He spoke in both English and Spanish during his address.
Bush also used the speech to revisit his theme of compassionate conservatism.
SOUNDBITE:
“Our children should also be educated in the values of society. We must teach them that there are right choices in life and wrong choices in life. Some people think it’s inappropriate to make moral judgements anymore. Not me,”
SUPER CAPTION: George W. Bush, Governor of Texas
The address signalled Bush’s intention to walk a political tightrope in the 2000 campaign.
If he decides to run, Bush will court conservative voters who control presidential primaries while fashioning a kinder, gentler message for mainstream Americans.

Recorded on March 29, 2018

Washington Post columnist and author, George F. Will, sits down with Peter Robinson in Austin, Texas to chat about the current administration and America’s favorite pastime—baseball. They discuss politics in the age of polarization and the future of America.

Will argues that Americans need to stop looking at presidents as moral exemplars and instead focus on the president as the head of the executive branch. Will and Robinson discuss a quote from his 1984 book, Statecraft as Soulcraft: What Government Does, “The United States acutely needs real conservatism, characterized by a concern to cultivate the best personas and the best in persons. It should express appreciation for the ennobling functions of government.” They use this quote as a launchpad to discuss the future of American politics.

The discussion turns to young adults and teenagers, and Will argues why history should be a required class for all college students. They also discuss the rise in birth rates of illegitimate children and what that means for society. They talk about family as the transmitter of social capital and that when the family fails, free society fails too.

In the end they discuss baseball as America’s favorite pastime, and George Will argues it is the sport of America’s future as parents stop letting their children play football because of the dangers of lifelong head and body injuries
