Social-emotional learning is often missing from core curricula, yet schools that teach it show multiple gains. Austin Independent School District, which has more than 87,000 students from culturally and economically diverse backgrounds, implemented the Second Step program in every school with great results. For example, in the three years since O. Henry Middle School adopted the Second Step program, discipline referrals have dropped by 87 percent.
