Directed by Robert Fancher Produced by Cody Sherrod.

we chronicle our journeys as a DJ, around the university of texas campus.

This was the final project for an undergraduate ACTLab course in 2005. The class was called “Performance” and the presentations had been difficult because I was only so much comfortable performing in front of a small group.

So, Cody and I decided to collaborate for our final end-of-semester project. I wanted to shoot a documentary-style Creative film about the life and attitude of a modern 21st century DJ. Cody Sherrod was in charge of the logistics for our 1 day and 1 night of filming. It was vital that we had every scene planned out on a map and that each stage selected was ideal for my entire DJ/mixer/turntable set.
“Art of DJ” was a witty pun on Sun Tzu’s “Art of War”, one of the most well-read manuals for battle in the history of mankind. I wanted to make a 3-5 minute video outlining the mindset of a DJ who is about to go into “battle” on the dancefloor. We were also shooting to capture the practical, down-to-earth strategies that a DJ will rely on to thrill the crowd and rock the speakers.
The most fun part for me was how much we enjoyed scoring the soundtrack using Sony Acid Pro 6.0.
For this film, We used a Vestax 275 3-channel mixer. We also lugged around a pair of Technics 1200-M3Ds
